Le Belle Macchine d’Italia, Concorso d’Eleganza and Driving Event

A three-day event held at the Skytop Lodge and Pocono International Raceway. This year’s event was fabulous for Italian-car enthusiasts.

Submitted by Carl Canales, Maserati Club International, Director NE Region

Joe Corbacio and his staff should be congratulated for bringing together the finest group of Maserati race cars that have ever been displayed in the United States. They included all three of the pre-war 8CTF Grand Prix race cars: the 1939 and 1940 Indy 500 race winning Boyle Special from the Indianapolis Speed Museum; Joel Finn’s beautifully restored and best of show 8CTF; and the 8CTF from the Collier collection in Florida which participated and won at the Pike’s Peak climb. The Indianapolis Speed Museum also displayed a Tipo 61 bird cage.

In addition to these historic race cars, the very early Tipo 26B from the Lawrence Auriana collection was on display. Frank Triasi from Classic Coach brought two Bird Cage Maseratis (Tipo 63 and 64), a 450S, and the famous 450 Costin Coupe. The Costin Coupe was driven by Sterling Moss in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1957. More details on the early history of this car and its conversion from race car to street use can be found in the March, 1963 issue of “Road and Track” magazine.

On display at the show was a new MC12 and many of the GT cars of the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s.

The weather was very nice for the Saturday car show. The same was not true for the driving event at Pocono International Raceway. For the first time in the history of this event, both days of the track event were rained out. As bad as the rain was, it allowed us to slow down our pace and meet new friends as we huddled together in the garages at the track. We were able to look closer at the details and quality of workmanship on many of the competition cars.

We thank the judges who were Stan Richart, Chuck Rine, Carl Canales, Kerry McMullen, and Bob Staaterman.

We look forward to next year’s event.
