2006 Maserati GT Coupe

Maserati's next-generation GT coupe and the companion Spyder convertible are due to be replaced in late 2005 or early 2006 by two-door models built on a shortened Quattroporte platform.

Engineers are currently testing "mules" of the new cars near the Maranello, Italy, headquarters of Maserati's sister company Ferrari, using modified Quattroporte four-door bodies to disguise the new mechanicals.

The new GT and Spyder will share a number of underbody components with the Quattroporte, including a Ferrari-built V-8 engine and rear-mounted Cambiocorsa transmission.

The next GT, while remaining a two-door, will seat four adults in a more spacious and luxurious cabin. Look for the sticker price to rise nearly 10 percent.
